Alternative Leach Area Items For Septic Systems

Clean leach fields are essential in a healthy septic system.

Septic leach fields should remain clean of roots to prevent solid and liquid wastes from backing up into the home or yard. Some commercial products for cleaning the leach fields potentially harm the environment. Environmentally friendly methods for cleaning leach field lines in a septic system are often less financially expensive than conventional products for cleaning the leach field lines.

Ice Cream Salt

Boiling 1 cup of ice cream salt in 2 cups of water creates a strong brine solution. The salt and brine solution has the power to eat through roots of trees located near the septic field lines to prevent clogs in the field line related to the roots of trees. Pour the solution down the commode, kitchen sinks, and other drains in the home once every six months to prevent the roots from growing and spreading up the leach field line.

Copper Sulfate

Copper sulfate is among the safest commercial products designed for keeping septic systems and leach fields running efficiently. Applying 1 lb. of copper sulfate solution dissolved in 1 cup of water down the commode and into the septic system kills roots in the tank itself and spreads the solution into the field lines to provide protection with the salt water and baking soda vinegar solution

Baking Soda and Vinegar

Mixing baking soda and vinegar together produces a foam. The foamy solution breaks down solid wastes from kitchen sinks, toilets, and other drains within the house leading into the septic system.

Yeast Culture

Yeast culture in the septic system breaks down solid waste matter including fecal matter and some brands of toilet paper, sanitary napkins and baby wipes. These solid waste materials accumulate in either the tank itself or in the field lines and can create the backup of raw sewage into the yard and home. Active yeast culture and water should be added twice each year to maintain the healthy balance of bacteria and the ability of the septic tank to break down solid waste materials.
