Spanish peanuts have a more rounded shape and are crispier than other peanut varieties, making them ideal for use in candy and for roasting. The plants have an upright growth manner, making it possible to raise more peanuts in a small area. They are also quite drought tolerant and do well in drier regions, such as Texas and New Mexico. They thrive in well-drained soil that contains very little clay and must have soil temperatures of at least 65 degrees Fahrenheit in order to germinate. It takes approximately 110 days for Spanish peanuts to mature after planting.
Instructions
1. Soak the peanut seeds overnight in a container of water.
2. Loosen the soil to a depth of 8 to 9 inches using a garden fork or tiller. Remove all rocks, large clumps of vegetation and roots. Add a 2-inch layer of compost and amend with gypsum applied at a rate of 15 pounds for every 1,000 square feet.
3. Create rows using a garden hoe. Leave a space of 36 inches between each row.
4. Plant the peanut seeds 1 3/4 inches deep and leave a space of 4 to 6 inches between each seed. Water until the soil is very moist. Continue to water anytime the top of the soil feels dry.
5. Add a 1- to 2-inch layer of mulch around the plants and between the rows after the seedlings emerge.
6. Cultivate the soil around the plants to keep it loose and eliminate any weeds that develop. Do not cultivate deeply; pull weeds that develop close to the plant's base by hand to avoid damaging the roots.
7. Soak the young peanut plants well once or twice each week, unless there has been sufficient rainfall. Allow the soil to dry out in the two weeks before the plants are ready to harvest because soil that remains too moist during this period can cause the peanuts to sprout while they are still in the ground.
