Begin A Drywall Business

Starting a drywalling business can be a great way to earn a steady income and build wealth. A successful drywall contractor runs his business both for financial efficiency and quality. The business can fluctuate with the market, so it's advisable to start a business when new home construction is on the rise because there will be higher demand for your services.

Instructions

Start a Drywall Business

1. Obtain a drywall estimating license. You cannot operate a business without this license so it needs to be the first investment you make in your business. Check Resources for further information or contact local community college programs or continuing education classes in your area for training schedules.

2. Invest in materials and tools. Some tools and equipment required are: T-square, nail gun, awls, keyhole saws, chalk line, and various hammers, screwdrivers and pliers. In order to meet appointments, you'll also need a reliable vehicle (preferably a truck or van capable of carrying heavy drywall and tools). As a best practice, brand your vehicle with the name of your business on the side.

3. Get experience. If you're new to the drywall business, you need to perfect your skills before completing jobs for customers. A good way to get experience is to apprentice for a drywaller in the area or a general contractor. Similarly, if you have friends or family in need of drywall work, offer your services for free to get the valuable experience.

4. Begin advertising. The best advertising will be word of mouth for quality jobs you've performed, but you first need to get your name out there. Depending on your budget, take out ads in weekly flyers, newspapers, and even local radio stations. Offer discounts and reduced rates to begin bringing in business.

5. Incorporate your business. If for any reason you are sued for work you've completed, you'll want to be able to legally separate your business income from your personal income.
