Cement backer board
is an alternative to metal lath systems that is ideal for installing tile and other smooth materials onto a wall. Cement backer board contains cement or gypsum particles along with fibers to keep the board semi-flexible. Cement board is not always waterproof, and it can allow water or other moisture to seep behind the board. One way to prevent this problem is to coat one or both sides of the board with polyester resin to add a waterproof layer.
Instructions
1. Lay the cement board on a flat surface. Check to ensure that a resin product is not already on the outside of the board. Some cement boards come with the resin pre-applied over the surface.
2. Lay fiberglass sheets over the top of the board. Cut the sheets so that they fit evenly over the top of the board. Wear thick gloves to protect your hands from fiberglass splinters, which can be painful.
3. Paint the resin onto the top of the cement board with a paint brush. Use a liberal application, but do not add enough so that it drips down the sides. Apply about as much as you would if you were painting the board with regular wall paint.
4. Place the fiberglass sheets over the resin. Roll over the sheets with a metal roller to eliminate air bubbles.
5. Apply a second sheet of resin over the fiberglass sheets for additional stability and smoothness. Allow the resin to dry for 24 hours.
6. Flip the cement board over and repeat the application process for the other side of the board. This will prevent water and other sources of moisture from getting inside the backer board and warping the boards. If you want to glue tile to the cement board, do not resin both sides of the board. One side of the board must remain rough or else the cement will not stick to the backer board. Allow this resin to dry for 24 hours as well.
