How Coal Plant Atomizers Work

Untreated emissions generated from coal-fire power plants contain dangerous amounts of sulfur dioxides.

One substantial challenge for coal power plants is controlling harmful pollutants called sulfur dioxides, or SOx. A dry flue gas desulfurization system is one type of technology created to address this problem. The most important component in these systems is the rotary atomizer.

Function

Coal power plants dry flue gas desulfurization systems utilize rotary atomizers. A rotary atomizer takes in a liquid or slurry and sprays it out in a fine mist while rotating at high speeds. In a FGD system, the slurry pushed through the atomizer is a lime-and-water mixture.

Purpose

The purpose of atomizing lime slurry is to remove sulfur from the power plant's flue gas. As the slurry is atomized, hot flue gas makes contact with the droplets and a fine powder is formed. The powder is a composite of the unwanted sulfur from the flue gas and calcium from the lime. The water from the slurry evaporates instantaneously.

Result

After the flue gas is treated by the atomizer, it is cooled and vented through a fabric filter. The solids that were formed by the atomized slurry continue to chemically react with the sulfur in the flue gas, so the filter is an important step for removing more of the sulfur.
