Sheetrock A Wall

Successful drywall installation starts with having the right tools.

Sheetrock brand gypsum panels are a common building material that makes adding walls a relatively quick and easy process. Gone are the days of lath and plaster, which required true artisans to create a wall. Armed with little more than a utility knife and an electric drill, you will be able to mount Sheetrock brand drywall to wood studs like a professional. The tricky part of completing a drywall installation is properly applying and sanding the joint compound.

Instructions

1. Measure the area you plan to mount the drywall sheet. The wood studs in your home should be 16 inches on center. Check that when cut, the piece of Sheetrock will extend from the center of one stud and end at the center of anther. Ending at the middle of a stud provides a place to anchor the next piece of drywall. The exception is at the sides, top and bottom of the wall.

2. Cut the Sheetrock to the correct size needed for your wall. Draw a line on the gypsum sheet where it needs to be cut. Score the line with a utility knife by cutting only through the paper of the drywall. Bend the drywall sheet until it snaps at the score mark. Use the utility knife to cut the paper on the other side of the sheet. Set aside the currently unneeded piece of drywall for possible use later in your project.

3. Enlist a friend to hold a piece of drywall in place. Ensure that the drywall will properly fit in the space.

4. Drill drywall screws through the Sheetrock into the wood stud. Stop drilling when the screw dimples just below the surface of the paper cover without breaking the paper. Do not countersink. Place screws 12 inches apart vertically along the studs.

5. Cover the space between the gypsum panels, known as joints, with drywall tape, such as fiberglass tape. With a 6-inch putty knife, spread a thin layer of joint compound over the fiber glass tape. Also, fill each screw hole with a joint compound as well. You may have to allow it to dry overnight.

6. Sand the dry joint compound smooth.

7. Add another coat of joint compound with a 12-inch putty knife. Feather the ends so the joint compound blends into the drywall. A small putty knife may be used to add a second coat to the screw holes. Allow to dry.

8. Sand the dry joint compound until it blends into the drywall.
