Proper filtration makes it safe to drink water at home and outdoors.
A science project on water filtration teaches students that untreated water from streams and rivers contains millions of bacteria and pollutants, which cause illness and disease. Filtration purifies water supplies to give us safe drinking water.
Materials
To create a science fair demonstration on water filters, you will need a two-liter soda bottle, scissors, muddy water and a selection of filtration materials such as gravel, sand, cotton balls, wire mesh, charcoal pebbles and alum.
Procedure
Cut the soda bottle in half, remove the cap and place the top half upside down in the bottom half. Choose your filtration materials and build the filter in layers in the top of the container. Save the alum for later. Pour muddy water into the filter and let it trickle into the lower trough. Observe the water clarity before and after filtration. Add alum to the cleaned water to complete purification. Try different filter combinations to compare effectiveness.
Display
Take pictures and make a written record of your scientific question, hypothesis, experiment and results for a visual science fair display. For an interactive exhibit, have a supply of muddy water and filtration materials on hand for demonstration purposes. Or allow visitors to build their own filter and test its effectiveness.
