The finished product of drywall over steel is identical to drywall over wood.
Drywall installation is a two-step process: mounting the boards to the wall and applying a drywall compound to the seams to finish the wall. Some walls in contemporary structures are built using steel studs instead of the standard wood studs. Finishing drywall over steel studs is no different than with wood studs. Steel, however, is a much denser material that requires special screws when mounting drywall. The screws are self-tapping metal screws that drive through the steel studs.
Instructions
1. Measure, cut and install each sheet of drywall as you would over wood studs.
2. Hold the sheet of drywall against the steel stud.
3. Drive a 1 1/4-inch type S drywall screw into the sheet of drywall and through the side of the steel stud, starting with the top corner of the sheet. The drywall screw will automatically puncture a hole of the proper size into the metal stud.
4. Countersink the tapered head of the screw slightly below the surface of the drywall.
5. Repeat the process, spacing the screws every 8 inches down the height of the stud and along each stud. Install the top row of screws first before dropping 8 inches to the next row.
