More male podiatrists operate their own business than female podiatrists.
As a podiatrist, you're responsible for providing care for one of the most fundamental parts of the body: the foot. Podiatrists are highly trained in both medical and surgical procedures for the feet, according to Today's Podiatrist. A 2007 poll of the members of the American Podiatric Medical Association revealed that 84 percent own their own business and 81 percent of those work in urban and suburban areas.
U.S. Average Salary
According to the 2009 poll conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the national average income for podiatrists was $81 an hour, which works out to $168,000 yearly. The lowest annual income reported that year was $82,000.
States With Below-Average Earnings
In 2009, several states reported average earnings below the national average, according to the BLS. Mississippi, Nebraska and Tennessee showed averages below $55 an hour, while Illinois reported the lowest earnings at $51 an hour, or $107,000 a year.
States with Above-Average Earnings
In 2009, there were also several states with above average earnings for surgical podiatrists. Arkansas, Connecticut, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Nevada and Wisconsin all had podiatrists earning well above the average of $63 an hour. Michigan was the highest-paying state, with podiatrists averaging $83 an hour, or $173,000 a year.
Gross Income
The American Podiatric Medical Association polled its business owning members in 2006 and found that the average gross earnings were $400,000 a year. "Gross" income refers to income before expenses and taxes. That same year 37 percent of members reported making more than $500,000 a year in gross income.
