Mildew odors can be removed from containers.
Mildew has a strong odor that can linger on surfaces such as plastic and wood. Containers exposed to mildew can spread the odor to contents. Several products can rid items of mildew smells.
Instructions
Removing Mildew Smells from a Clean Container
1. Remove items from the container.
2. Place three to four dry silica, activated alumina, or anhydrous calcium sulfate granules in a waxed cardboard box such as a milk carton. The products are available at chemical supply stores and from online chemical outlets.
3. Punch four or five small holes in the cardboard container.
4. Place the perforated cardboard box in the container with the mildew odor. Place a lid on the container and store it in a cool, dry place for one week so the granules can absorb the mildew odor.
5. Check the container after one week. If the odor is present, dispose of the silica gel, activated alumina,or anhydrous calcium sulfate granules according to recommendations on the product's packaging and repeat Steps 2 through 4 until the mildew odor is gone.
Cleaning a Dirty Container
6. Mix 10 tbsp. of washing soda or trisodium phosphate and 1 gallon of cold water in a bucket. Stir the mixture with a scrub brush.
7. Apply the mixture to the container's inner walls and thoroughly scrub the container with the brush until it is clean. Wet a soft cloth or rag with warm water from a sink, wring out excess, and wipe the container with the wet cloth or rag to remove any mixture residue.
8. Dry the container with a clean, soft cloth or rag.
