Make Plaster Columns

Pillars and columns are popular home-decor items. They can add class and a Roman charm to almost any room. However, pillars and columns can be quite expensive, ranging anywhere from $20 to more than $1,000. In many cases, it is more cost effective to make columns at home out of plaster. Plaster columns can be decorated to look as though they have a variety of different finishes. Making your own plaster columns is easier than it sounds.

Instructions

1. Read the instructions on the package of the plaster of Paris. Add the amount of water to the bucket that is specified in those instructions, then the designated amount of plaster. Stir with the mixing tool until thoroughly blended.

2. Spray the plaster mold(s) with mold-release spray or cooking spray.

3. Pour the plaster of Paris into the plater mold(s) and allow to dry.

4. Once dry, turn the plaster mold over and press it gently until the hardened plaster piece pops out.

5. Use a nail file or sandpaper to smooth any rough spots on the plaster column.
