Repair Drywall Paper

You might need to repair drywall paper if it becomes damaged when removing wallpaper or other wall coverings or if something knocks into the wall. You cannot paint over bare drywall, as it will absorb the paint and flake over time. By repairing the drywall paper correctly, the damage will not be visible and the repair can last a lifetime.

Instructions

1. Paint over the damaged area with a water-based primer, such as those made by Gardz. You can use an alcohol-based primer, but the fumes are dangerous in enclosed spaces.

2. Stir the joint compound in its container until smooth. Smooth on a coat of the compound, also known as mud, starting at the top of the area and working down using the drywall knife. Use straight vertical lines. Apply a coat that is approximately 1/16 inch thick.

3. Allow the mud to dry, and then sand off any rough areas with fine-grit sandpaper until smooth. Apply a second coat of mud to fill any indents or uneven areas and sand again.

4. Apply another coat of primer to the area once the mud is dry. Allow it to dry overnight before painting or wallpapering over.
