Calcium-deficient soil benefits from the addition of gypsum.
Gypsum is a type of lime sometimes included in fertilizer mixtures. It contains high levels of both calcium and sulfur, with approximately 40 percent of gypsum comprised of these two nutrients alone. Both are necessary for proper plant growth.
Significance
Calcium increases nutrient absorption, but does not spread to new growth. This means a continual, steady supply is necessary for proper plant health. The sulfur in gypsum comes in the form of sulfate, making it readily available for plant use.
Use
Soil tests determine calcium levels, or use a low or high pH level -- below 5.5 or above 8.2 -- as an indicator of calcium deficiency, according to National Gardening Association. Correct low calcium levels with 10 lbs. of pure gypsum per 1,000 square feet a maximum of three times per growing season.
Tips
Low calcium levels in the soil occur most often in areas with acidic soil and high rainfall levels. Although soil in western portions of the United States contains plenty of calcium, it is not available to plants in soils where pH levels reach 7.0 or higher.
