Dissolve Minerals Into Liquid

Sugar is a common household chemical that dissolves readily in water.


Dissolving is the process that occurs when the molecules that compose a chemical separate and become evenly dispersed between the molecules of a liquid. The solid is referred to as the solute, and the liquid is referred to as the solvent. Dissolving is a process that may or may not occur depending on environmental conditions such as the pressure and temperature. In order to dissolve some solids, you may have to create conditions that won't occur naturally.


Instructions


1. Determine if the mineral you want to dissolve is molecularly polar or molecularly non-polar.


2. Fill the beaker with vegetable oil if your mineral is non-polar, water if it is polar.


3. Place the mineral in the filled beaker, and place the beaker on the hot plate.


4. Turn the hot plate to the highest temperature, and stir constantly while the beaker is heating.


5. Keep stirring and heating until the mineral completely dissolves.
