Gypsum Soil Treatment

Gypsum is found in crystal deposits at the bottoms of dried sea floors.

Gypsum is hydrated calcium sulfate. It is formed in the beds of ancient seas as they dried out and left deposits of minerals. Gypsum in the agricultural world is known as a soil conditioner and fertilizer.

Use

Gypsum is most commonly used to amend soils high in sodium content. Gypsum can be useful in breaking up compacted, clay soils.

How Often

According to Washington State University a single application of the mineral can last several years. Don't worry about over-application; there is little damage associated with it.

Nutrients

Gypsum removes sodium and replaces it with calcium, reducing the saline content in the soil. Also, the calcium in gypsum chemically loosens clay soil by competing with the salt in the clay and drawing soil particles together.

Application

Spread 40 lbs. of granular gypsum per 1,000 square feet of land. For residential application, simply scoop them and distribute evenly with your hands, then water immediately.

Considerations

Linda Chalker-Scott is an associate professor at Washington State University who claims that the benefits of gypsum in a residential garden are a myth. Chalker-Scott says gypsum can leach aluminum into soil and induce magnesium deficiency in ornamental plants.
