Pour Gypsum

Gypsum is used to slow the hardening process of cement.

When working with concrete there are times when you need to slow the hardening process. Adding gypsum powder into the cement and water mixture achieves this effect. Gypsum acts as a retardant to the cement hardening allowing you to pour and set pilings, foundations or other concrete needs. The process of mixing the gypsum to cement and water is relatively simple. When working with the powders and cements be sure to wear gloves and a ventilator mask.

Instructions

1. Put on the gloves and ventilator mask. In the cement mixer add your quantity of dry cement and water. Use whatever ratio you need to achieve the proper dormant period (the time before the setting and hardening period begins with the cement).

2. Add the powdered gypsum. Start with 4 to 5 cups at first, slowly adding more as needed. Pour it right from the bag, into the cement mixer and into the cement and water mix. Let the cement mixer continue to turn for the prescribed amount of time for your given ratio of cement and water.

3. Test the cement mixture after the dormant period, usually half of the time the cement will take to harden and set according to your mix ratio (if your mix ratio says the hardening will take place in 60 minutes, your dormant period will be 30 minutes), by stirring the mixture and seeing where the cement is in the hardening process. Add more gypsum if you need to slow the hardening process further.

4. Pour your cement into your foundation frame, piling squares or other molds. Do not add gypsum into the molds. Only add gypsum into the cement mixer with the water and cement.
