Types Of Wood Boards

Wood boards come in a variety of grains and textures.

Furniture makers and craftsmen use different types of wood boards to make beautiful furnishings and decor. Wood boards can be classified by durability, flexibility and texture. Each board grain is distinct.

Soft and Hard Wood Boards

Cherry wood boards are used to make beautiful furniture.

Many American furniture makers use hardwoods such as cherry, maple and walnut. Cherry wood is durable, hard, heavy and strong. It is used for numerous cabinetry and furniture items including tables, chairs and bed frames. Cherry wood board grains are closed, making it easy to polish and shine for an exquisite look. Hard rock maple is a white grade of maple that has a deep, golden ivory color when polished. Walnut boards can come in a chocolate or purplish brown color such as North American walnut, which is durable and finishes nicely. Other soft and hard wood includes ash, basswood, beech, birch, butternut, Tennessee aromatic cedar, fir, hickory, pine and red oak.

California Wood Boards

Red Cedar is native to the Pacific Northwest.

Wood from the Pacific Northwest is known for its quality and beauty. Madrone, a very hard California native reddish-pink wood, is used in flooring, architectural structures and furniture-making. Pacific maple boards are medum hard, golden yellow and come in a wavy grain or fiddleback--grain used for making musical instruments. Alder, another California wood, is soft and warm brown and used to make cabinets and furniture. Black and tan oak, redwood, myrtlewood, claro walnut and western red cedar are other native California woods.

Exotic Woods

Mahogany is a durable exotic wood.

There are many kinds of exotic wood boards with vibrant colors and distinctive grain patterns. Most exotic wood is used in turnings and for highlighting furniture. However, African mahogany and granadillo are used to build chairs and cabinets. African mahogany is imported from Ghana. Granadillo, a close-grained wood streaked with a tan-like brown color, is from Southern Mexico and used to make furniture. Lacewood is a soft wood from Australia. Other exotic wood boards include bubinga, spanish cedar, ebony, fishtail oak, jatoba, kingwood, narra, purpleheart, Brazilian rosewood and satinwood.
