Pond Clearing Chemicals

Clear ponds beautify the outdoors.

Natural and man-made ponds collect debris, algae and fungi. Harmful bacteria can start to form in them if they are not cleaned regularly. When you clean ponds it is important to use clearing chemicals that are not dangerous to animals, plants and the environment. Pond clearing chemicals should work with minimal effort. The chemicals purge harmful toxins from pond water and allow fish and other aquatic animals to thrive.

Vanish Dechlorinator

Vanish Dechlorinator Liquid is made by Crystal Clear and can be found in farm supply and pet stores. The liquid removes chloramines and heavy metal from ponds. It also adds a slime coat to pond water, which helps fish and other aquatic animals heal from cuts and wounds. It protects animals from stress during water changes (when you replace five to 10 percent of the water currently in the pond with fresh de-chlorinated water). The dry formula also removes toxic chlorine from pond water, making it easier for aquatic animals to breath.

Gypsum

Gypsum, also known as calcium sulfate, dissolves in agricultural lime. It lowers pH and alkalinity levels in ponds. Gypsum helps to clear or clarify pond water. The material is found in mines and must be completely dissolved in pond water to be effective. Farm supply stores usually sell this product.

Algae Fix

Algae Fix is sold at pet and aquarium stores. The liquid removes algae and blanket weed from pond water. An eight ounce bottle can treat as much as 2,400 gallons of pond water. A two-and-a-half gallon container of Algae Fix can clear as much as 96,000 gallons of pond water. If you mix Algae Fix with barley bales or barley extract you can prevent the build-up of algae in your pond. Start by using small amounts of the liquid to test how the plants and animals in your pond react to it. Removing too much algae from your pond could decrease the water's oxygen levels.

Pond Zyme Plus

One 16-oz. container of Pond Zyme Plus will treat and clear up to 16,000 gallons of pond water. The solution increases enzymes in the water, a natural ingredient that helps to reduce or eliminate green sludge. You can also use a submersible ultraviolet water clarifier (UV) with Pond Zyme Plus to keep pond water clear. UV clarifiers fit inside ponds similar to the way thermometers are affixed to the inside of aquariums.
