Install Greenboard Drywall

Greenboard is a moisture-resistant form of drywall that's often used for walls in bathrooms and kitchens. Like drywall, it's made with gypsum, but it's treated with oil to help it stand up to moisture. Greenboard isn't completely waterproof in the way that cement board is, and shouldn't be used in shower stalls. But for other parts of the bathroom, it will help prevent "soft walls" that can occur when regular drywall is subjected to moist air.

Instructions

1. Measure across the stud wall from one end. If it's longer than 8 feet, measure to the last stud that's within 8 feet, and take the measurement from the middle of the width of the stud.

2. Mark out your measurement on a piece of greenboard, using a pencil and T-square. Score the piece with a utility knife along the line, then bend the piece until it breaks at the line.

3. Set the piece to the wall. If the wall is longer than 8 feet, set the cut end against the end of the wall and the factory edge on the middle of the thickness of the last stud. Secure the board with galvanized screws, shooting them in evenly 8 or 10 inches along each stud.

4. Repeat for each piece of greenboard, building up the wall and covering the entire span. Arrange the boards so there are no four-way intersections between them.

5. Press mesh drywall tape over the seams of the boards. Spread joint compound over the tape with a drywall knife, making the seams just wide enough to cover the tape. Get it completely smooth. Let it set for six to eight hours.

6. Apply a second coat of joint compound over the seams, making them a little wider than the first coat. Let it dry for six to eight hours.

7. Apply a third coat of joint compound, making it wider than the previous one. Let it dry, then sand it smooth. The wall is now ready for painting.
