Drywall clips are a handy way to hang sheetrock or gypsum in areas where there may be a lack of support from behind or in places where studs are missing. By minimizing the number of studs in a framed wall, using clips can also help your home be more energy-efficient by providing more room for the installation of insulation.
Instructions
Use Drywall Clips
1. Locate the areas in which you plan to use clips to hang your gypsum or sheetrock, and estimate how many clips you will need for your project. Typically, clips are used for interior corners (where two pieces of drywall meet for form a 90-degree "corner") as well as in places where two sheets meet and are "butted" together but there is no wall or ceiling stud.
2. Begin at one end of the ceiling, and install a clip over each wall stud either by nailing, stapling or screwing through the beveled face of the plate (using a minimum of two fasteners per clip). If there are no studs in the corners, mount the clips to the top plate. Secure drywall to both studs and installed clips.
3. Start at the top of the stud at an inside wall corner and install a clip with the recommended fasteners. Add additional clips every 16 inches or so. Be sure to install a clip within 6 inches of the bottom plate. Do this for each corner. Secure drywall to both studs and installed clips.
4. Where two pieces of gypsum will be "butted" together, install one clip on the first piece of gypsum board at roughly an inch above the "taper" (beveled edge), then stagger two to three clips vertically about 16 inches apart. Use screws to secure the clips to the board about 3/4-inch from the edge. Mount the first board in place, then slide the second board into place and secure to clips as well as to studs.
