The Typical Earnings Of New Podiatric Doctors

Podiatric physicians, better know as podiatrists, are doctors who diagnose and treat conditions related to the foot and lower leg. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported 9,720 podiatrists were working in the United States as of May 2009. The 10th percentile salary reported by the BLS, meaning 10 percent of podiatrists earned this amount of less, is likely to represent an average salary of new podiatric physicians. The May 2009 BLS report showed the 10th percentile salary was $48,770.

Salary by State

The states with the highest 10th percentile salaries were Arkansas, at $90,560 per year; Wisconsin, at $89,200; and Nevada, at $88,490. The states with the lowest 10th percentile salaries were Oklahoma, at $14,750; Minnesota, at $34,920; and Tennessee, at $36,290.

Salary by Metropolitan Area

The metropolitan areas with the highest 10th percentile salaries for podiatrists were Warren-Troy-Farmington Hills, Michigan, at $120,310 per year; Milwaukee-Waukesha-West Allis, Wisconsin, at $127,050; and Detroit-Warren-Livonia, Michigan, at $119,400. The metropolitan areas with the lowest 10th percentile salaries were Richmond, Virginia, at $28,060; Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, Michigan-Wisconsin, at $33,370; and Salt Lake City, Utah, at $37,800.

Other Salary Information

The BLS reported the median annual salary for all podiatrists as $116,250, with 50 percent earning between $78,270 and $166,400 or more. The mean annual salary was $131,730.

Considerations

The BLS expects employment of podiatrists to increase by nine percent from 2008 to 2018, partly because a more active and aging population will need more foot care. Most podiatrists are in solo practice, although group practice is becoming more common. The BLS noted that podiatrists in partnerships tend to earn more than those who have a solo practice.
