Red, cloudy water prevents sunlight from reaching the pond floor, limiting the ecosystem of the pond.
A pond can appear red and cloudy in areas with a high iron content to the soil. Clay particles containing a high proportion of iron carry a higher than usual electrical charge, which causes them to bounce off one another with more energy. This greatly slows the rate at which they sink to the bottom of the pond. The key to clearing a red pond is to neutralize this electrical charge. The fastest and easiest way to do this is with gypsum.
Instructions
1. Calculate the volume of your pond by multiplying the surface area by the depth. For example, a pond that is 5 feet wide, 10 feet long, and 3 feet deep will have a volume of about 150 cubic feet (5 x 10 x 3).
2. Scatter powdered gypsum evenly over the surface of the pond. One pound of gypsum will treat approximately 90 cubic feet of water.
3. Wait four weeks. If the pond remains cloudy, add one-fourth the original amount of gypsum. Repeat until the pond has cleared.
