Bar Ceiling Ideas

Decorative light fixture and dropped ceiling in a bar

When decorating a bar, it's easy to focus attention on the bar itself, the other furniture and the color scheme. The ceiling is often overlooked, yet it provides an opportunity to set the tone for the space. Whether you choose to do a simple paint job, install decorative tiles or hang special light fixtures to liven up the ceiling plane, your patrons will be tempted to occasionally look up from their drinks.

Tin Ceiling

Tin ceilings are a classic look for bars, especially those located in historic buildings. If the original tin ceiling is not preserved, you can purchase new tin ceiling tiles to recreate the look. Choose from a muted metallic finish or a shinier look, and decide whether to use elaborate tiles or those with a minimal design. Coordinate this look with the overall design of the space. Use matching, decorative crown molding with your bar tin ceiling.

Black Paint

Many spaces have unattractive lay-in acoustical tile. If you can't afford to rip it out and install a new ceiling, consider painting the ceiling black. This is also a good tactic for old, damaged ceilings. The dark paint will conceal uneven areas and stains while creating a cozy environment. You may need more light fixtures, however, as dark ceilings absorb a lot of light.

Dropped Ceiling Design

Drop portions of the ceiling and finish them with gypsum board in an interesting design. Create a tray ceiling to highlight a special space within the bar, such as the dance floor. For a funky look, add a wavy-edged dropped ceiling to subtly define separate spaces and add interest. Over the bar area, you might consider installing a dropped ceiling with special lighting and shelving to accommodate bottles and glasses.

Special Lighting

Good lighting sets the mood in a bar. Choose from a plethora of ceiling fixtures to appropriately highlight the space. Track lighting, similar to the type used in museums, beams light directly at a wall or other surface. Direct the heads to illuminate art displayed on the walls. Pendant fixtures hang over individual tables, and they are available in many styles or colors. Recessed lighting works well in bars with low ceilings so patrons avoid hitting their heads.

Decorative Objects

A bar ceiling can serve as an empty canvas to house various collections. Glue records to the ceiling if music is the bar's theme, vintage signs if the bar is retro-style, disco balls for a 70s themed bar or hang flags in sports bars. Some bars even develop the tradition for patrons to glue dollar bills to the walls and ceilings. For a romantic look, drape sheer fabric swags in shades like red, pink or white.
