A Brita pitcher is a good way to conveniently store a large amount of filtered water for quick access. The benefits of using a Brita filter to remove impurities from the water you drink range from better tasting water to improved long-term health. Many substances that are filtered out of drinking water through the use of a Brita pitcher filter are recognized as harmful by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.


Chlorine


While chlorine is a helpful substance that some areas use to treat water for bacteria and other microbes, it can cause your drinking water to smell or taste bad. Chlorine is trapped in the filter and is removed from the water that falls in the lower half of the pitcher, resulting in a pure, crisp tasting drinking water. There is no need to worry about the remaining water being contaminated due to the lack of chlorine because the chlorine in the water has already purged most common microbes.


Lead


Lead is an especially harmful element that can cause a myriad of health problems if consumed, including high blood pressure, kidney problems and delayed development in children, according to the EPA. Major sources of lead in the drinking supply usually are a result of the wearing away of natural mineral deposits and corrosion of metals present in your water pipes.


Turbidity


A Brita pitcher filters out cloudy water and all of the impurities associated with murky water. When a water supply has a high level of turbidity, it is essentially dirty water. A range of factors can result in a high turbidity level, such as algae growth, soil erosion, bacteria and urban runoff. Brita filters remove the factors that cause murkiness in the drinking water, leaving behind pure, clean water.


Erosion Minerals


Other harmful minerals that may be present in common tap water are also strained from your drinking water by the Brita pitcher's filter. Asbestos, benzene and copper are among the many elements that the device prevents from contaminating your drinking water. These substances enter the water supply through erosion, corrosion and runoff, but the filter manages to safely catch them all.
