The Right Way To Hang Drywall

Drywall

Standard drywall sheets are 1/2 inch thick, 4 feet wide by 8 feet tall and weigh 50 lbs. Ceiling drywall also comes in 4 by 8-foot sheets, is 5/8-inch thick and weighs 75 pounds. Therefore, consider your physical comfort level before starting the job. Always install ceiling drywall before the walls, as the latter helps support the former.

Instructions

1. Place the first sheet of drywall in the corner of the ceiling, so the long side rests along the center of the ceiling joist. Drill 1 5/8-inch drywall screws into the joists every 10 inches. Measure the required size of the next piece, using a chalk line to mark longer lines on the drywall before cutting.

2. Run a tradesman's knife along the chalk (or pencil) line and bend the drywall on the opposite side to the cut. The drywall will break on the cut. Run the knife on the inside of the cut to separate the drywall. Screw the cut piece in position up on the ceiling. Continue in like fashion until the entire ceiling is covered.

3. Hold a piece of drywall facing up against the studs in one corner of the room. Nail the drywall to the studs every 10 inches. Be careful not to knock the nails in so that the head breaks the paper (it should merely indent the paper). Repeat measuring and cutting as necessary until all the walls are covered.
