Learning install drywall anchors opens up an entire world of home improvement projects to the do-it-yourself builder; drywall anchors can not only support lightweight items, such as framed pictures, but also attach shelf brackets and heavy mirrors to hollow walls. The most common type of drywall anchor, the plastic insert, installs quickly with common tools. Learn the right way to hang drywall anchors and you can securely attach a nearly endless variety of items to your home's hollow walls.

Instructions

1. Mark the anchor's location on the wall's surface with a pencil. Attach a twist drill bit to a power drill. The drill bit's diameter must be equivalent to the diameter of the anchor's shank at its widest point; manufacturers list suggested drill bit size on anchor packaging.

2. Place the drill bit's tip onto the pencil mark. Activate the drill and bore a hole through mark until the bit passes into the wall's interior cavity. Place the thin, rounded end of the plastic insert anchor into the hole. Press the anchor into the hole until its rim butts against the wall's exterior face. Embed the anchor's rim slightly below the wall's surface with a forceful push.

3. Attach a driver bit to the power drill. Place a wood screw, sheet metal screw or drywall screw into the hollow center of the anchor; anchor manufacturers specify screw type and size on anchor packaging. Press the driver bit into the screw's slot. Activate the drill and allow the screw's threads to grab and join with the interior sides of the anchor. Do not force the screw into the anchor; when the threads grab the anchor the screw will pull itself inward.

4. Fasten the screw into the anchor until the underside of the screw's head butts against the rim of the plastic insert anchor.
