Install Backer Board for a Ceramic Tile Project


If you are a do it yourselfer and planning to install backer board for your ceramic tile home remodeling project, here are some tips might come handy for you during your work. Good luck!


Instructions


1. First, use a razor knife to cut the backer board, especially if you bought a gypsum-core backer board. do it? It's just like you are cutting your regular drywall. First, score the surface with the razor and then snap the board, which will create a clean line. Second, use the razor to cut the fiberglass backing.


2. Once the backer board is cut, spend sometime to make sure the wall studs are plumb and in the same plane before you install backer board. If you want your tile to go in easily, the backer board must be plumb and flat.


3. If you will use the backer board on the floors, make sure they are attached to a sound subfloor. Before installing your backer board, first screw down the wood subfloor to the floor joists. Make sure the floor is not springy because otherwise you will get a cracked tile.


4. In order to make sure that there are no hollow spots or voids in between the backer board and the wood subfloor, install your backer board in cement thin-set motar.
