Fiberglass is also used in the construction of boat hulls.
Fiberglass material is used for any number of construction projects from insulation to the construction of automobile bodies. Fiberglass insulation is soft and can be cut with a simple utility knife. Other fiberglass materials such as fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) will need something a little stronger -- such as a table saw -- to cut through it. Cutting through the tougher fiberglass materials is similar to cutting through wood, except you will need a special blade and perhaps an assistant to help steady the panel, depending on the size.
Instructions
1. Use your tape measure and marker to determine where you need to cut the fiberglass in order to get it to the correct size.
2. Place the fiberglass on your table saw and adjust the guide rail so that the blade lines up with the marks you made. This will ensure that you get a precise, straight edge when you begin cutting.
3. Ensure that no clothing, long hair or other impediments are anywhere near the blade, and then turn on the saw. Depending on the size of the fiberglass panel, you may wish to have an assistant hold the side of the fiberglass to steady it.
4. Guide your panel forward into the saw blade. Do not attempt to force the fiberglass into the blade, as this may gum up and eventually cause damage to the saw motor.
5. Push the fiberglass all the way through, making sure to keep your hands well clear of the blade as you push, and then turn off the saw and remove the fiberglass from the table. Repeat these steps as necessary to cut the fiberglass down to the needed size.
