Making a mold of an object is a good way to make multiple identical copies of it. The simplest molds are often made of latex or plaster of Paris, but there are many different materials you can use to make molds. Although it may seem like a simple process, making molds takes patience and practice---it's easy to destroy a mold or make it improperly. There are several steps that need to be followed when making a mold of a pot.
Instructions
1. Nail the boards together to form a bottomless box. The nails should not be too tight, since you will be taking the box apart later. Place the box on a flat surface covered with the plastic sheet and wedge clay into all overlapping seams to prevent plaster from leaking.
2. Place the pot inside the box so that the open end is flush with the surface of the table. Make a mark inside the box that's level with the top of the pot; make a second mark 50 percent higher inside the box.
3. Mix your plaster according to the instructions on the bag. Be careful not to breathe in any of the plaster. Stir the plaster thoroughly so that there are no lumps in it.
4. Pour the plaster over your pot and fill the box up to the second line you drew. Be sure to pour your plaster within 10 minutes after you've mixed it so that it doesn't start to set.
5. Let the mold sit for 24 hours. Use a hammer to gently knock the boards apart. Remove your pot from the mold before using the mold for other projects.
