Distinction Between Gypsum & Fiberock

Fiberock is made from 95 percent recycled materials.

Gypsum is a mineral compound often used in drywall and cement. Fiberock is building material made of fiberglass mesh, gypsum and cellulose fibers. Fiberock is usually more expensive to purchase than gypsum drywall.

Use for Walls

Gypsum drywall is commonly used for interior house walls. Fiberock may be used for walls and as sheeting under ceramic tile. It does not have the paper face that is found on gypsum drywall but may be painted like drywall.

Use as Flooring

Fiberock is often used as an underlayment for ceramic tile, vinyl, hardwood and laminate flooring as well as for carpets. It provides a smooth, flat floor surface. Gypsum drywall cannot be used as an underlayment.

Properties

Fiberock is moisture resistant and will not support the growth of mold. It is hard and resists swelling and warping. Gypsum wallboard does not have these properties.
