Sheetrock is also called plaster board or gypsum board. That is because the popular building material is made from gypsum, an inexpensive mineral, and then covered with a paper backing. This paper surface can sometimes attract black mold, especially if the paper remains in a moistened condition for a long period of time.
Instructions
1. Soak the infected areas with a mixture of mild soapy detergent and water. Then scrub gently with a plastic scrub pad to see if the solution will remove the mold. Let the surface of the sheet rock dry before attempting the next step.
2. Spray the area with a disinfectant that comes in a spray bottle. Then wipe clean with a paper towel or a mild solution of soapy water. If the mold still remains go to step 3.
3. Cut away the infected area of paper with a utility knife and remove the paper completely. Do this until all the paper backing containing the mold is removed.
4. Fill the indentation with fresh joint compound until the surface is even all across the area, where you just removed the paper. You can spread the joint compound with a 10 or 12 inch sheet rock knife. Let the compound dry.
5. Sand the dried joint compound until it is smooth. Apply a second coat if necessary. Let it dry and sand in smooth with medium grade sandpaper.
