Fresh paint Plasterboard After Wallpaper

After removing the wallpaper, you can paint the plasterboard wall the color of your choice.

Wallpaper over plasterboard walls is a common decorating technique, but as tastes change or the wallpaper ages, the time comes to remove the wallpaper. Just stripping it away can damage the plasterboard beneath, but by steaming the material you can unbind the wallpaper, reversing the application process so that it peels easily away. After the removal, redecorating is just a matter of a new application of interior paint, covering your plasterboard walls with the colors and patterns you wish to match the d cor of your choice.

Instructions

1. Score the surface of the wallpaper with a wallpaper-piercing tool. Grasp the tool tightly in one hand, and roll it over the surface of the wallpaper. The small blades in the base of the tool will piece the wallpaper all across its surface, allowing you access to the underside through the small holes it creates.

2. Fill a wallpaper steamer's water reservoir to the fill line, and turn it on. Allow the steamer to heat to the point where steam emits from the handle. Trigger the steam and then run the flat board-like steamer handle over the wallpaper, one strip at a time. The steam moves through the multiple holes made by the piercing-tool and softens the adhesive that holds the wallpaper in place. Work the steamer from the top of the strip to the bottom, then peel the steamed paper right from the wall. You can rent a wallpaper steamer from a home-improvement store or equipment rental office.

3. Wash the surface of the wall with a mixture of two parts hot water and one part vinegar. Use a damp cloth, taking care not to saturate the plasterboard and cause peeling. Pat the wall dry with a clean cloth.

4. Mask off the surrounding surfaces by laying a strip of masking tape at the edges of those surfaces where they meet the wall. Place a drop cloth along the base of the floor to catch any paint spills.

5. Apply a coat of primer onto the plasterboard. Cut in the primer along the edges and corners of the wall, using a 1-inch paintbrush. Cover an edge section about 3 inches wide with the paintbrush, then cover the remainder of the surface, using a long-nap paint roller. The primer will cover the tape used over the seams of the board and create an even painting surface for the topcoat of paint. Allow the primer time to dry completely before continuing. Drying times vary according to manufacturer, so consult manufacturer instructions for a recommended drying period.

6. Apply the finish coat of your choice. Use the same process to cover the wall as you used with the primer, beginning with the edge and then rolling the paint onto the center of the wall. Switch to a medium-nap roller for the top coat of paint, as the surface of the wall has been smoothed by the primer coat. Allow the paint to dry according to manufacturer recommendations, then apply a second coat to ensure complete coverage. Allow the second coat to dry, then remove the masking tape from the wall edges.
