Foam board
is an inexpensive alternative for insulating a home, protecting products during shipping, and for using as a structural reinforcement. A few types are available and can be bought in bulk from various suppliers. Each type, while being somewhat similar, has certain qualities that better suit it for a certain application than others.
Types
Common materials include molded expanded polystyrene, that can molded into many items; polyisocyanurate, which is insulating and somewhat thinner; and polyurethane, which is similar to polyisocyanurate.
Considerations
All types of foam board insulation should be protected from direct sunlight (UV rays can damage it) and, in both warm and cold climates, moisture as well; they should also be treated with insecticides.
Warnings
Foam board is difficult to ignite, but soon burns quickly, emitting toxic gases; it should be installed with a fire barrier, such as gypsum wallboard.
Function
Molded expanded polystyrene (MEPS) is formed of compressed beads and is used to protect shipping materials and as insulation, while extruded expanded polystyrene (XEPS), which is initially liquefied and then shaped, is denser and more easily compressed, making it best suited for construction.
Effects
Polyisocyanurate, or polyiso board, resists deformation when subjected to force and is stable from -100ºF to +250ºF, making it a good choice for roofing insulation.
