Gypsum, otherwise known as Hydrated Calcium Sulfate has many common uses and is found in a variety of materials. Gypsum, when it has no impurities, is a colorless, odorless mineral and is an extremely good insulator. When compared to other crystals and minerals, it has a warm temperature to the touch. It is formed from running saline water and can include other minerals that have been trapped by water or air bubbles.
Drywall
The finish for walls and ceilings known as drywall is made of gypsum. Drywall is also known by the name Gypsum board for the mineral that is the main component. Gypsum powder goes through a process in which most of its water content is evaporated to create plaster of paris. The plaster material is then placed between two sheets of heavy paper. Sometimes the sheets used in drywall fabrication are made of fiberglass instead of paper to help prevent the growth of mold.
Hair Products
Gypsum has been added to some beauty and hair supplies such as foot creams, conditioners, shampoos and other hair care products. Gypsum is a good mineral and additive to hair products because of its binding and thickening properties. It will bond to the hair and is found in thickening hair care products.
Fertilizer
While it is not common in today's fertilizers, Gypsum has been used as an additive. It is known to promote growth and health in plants, flowers, trees and shrubs. It works by penetrating the clay products found in the hard subsoil. This allow air and water to circulate through the ground and reach the roots of the plants. The granular gypsum fertilizer is applied with a spreader and can be put down at any time of the year.
Tofu
Tofu can be made by using gypsum as a coagulator. To make tofu, you simply use a small amount of gypsum coagulate to thicken the soy milk. The resulting curds and whey are pressed to form blocks of tofu.
