Firebloc Type C Gypsum Specifications

Firebloc Type C gypsum wallboard is used in interior applications.

Firebloc Type C gypsum is the trademarked name for a fire-resistant wallboard that can provide fire resistance in walls, columns, roof-ceilings, floor-ceilings, beams, trusses and girders. Intended for interior residential or commercial applications only, the wallboard is used as a covering material. As a nonstructural product, the wallboard should not be used as a nailing base.

Measurements

Firebloc Type C gypsum wallboard is available in 1/2-inch and 5/8-inch thicknesses. The thermal resistance value for the 1/2 inch wallboard is 0.45; for the 5/8 inch wallboard it is 0.48. Both wallboard thicknesses come in 4-foot widths, and measure 8 to 12 feet in length, with tapered panel edges folded around the long edges to reinforce and provide protection to the core. The ends are square-cut and finished smooth, allowing for ease in installation. The face side of the fire-resistant core is encased in 100 percent recycled natural-finish paper and a sturdy paper liner is on the back side. Custom lengths and edges may be available on special orders. The weight of the wallboard is approximately 1.2 to 2.3 pounds per square foot.

Fire Rating

Improved fire resistance qualities are due to the specially formulated Type X core. The Firebloc Type C gypsum wallboard is enhanced to offer a fire rating of up to four hours. This complies with GA 600 or the UL Fire Design Manual. When the joints are covered, the wallboard will resist the passage of smoke. The noncombustible wallboard panels can be sized and scored for quick use.

Certification

Firebloc Type C gypsum wallboard has Greenguard-certified building material status for indoor air quality. To qualify for Greenguard Children and Schools status, the wallboard has met more rigorous emission standards. The wallboard has no asbestos, according to the American Gypsum website. The wallboard must be kept dry and does not support mold, if properly handled, transported, stored, installed and maintained.

Standards

Firebloc Type C gypsum wallboard meets American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards and other standards. Manufacturing standards met are ASTM C 1396 section 5 (C36) and Federal Specifications SS-L-30D Type 3, Grade X. Application installation standards met are ASTM C 840, and Gypsum Association GA-216, and 214. Applicable Surface Burning characteristics met are ASTM E 84.
