Crafts With Handprint Conforms

Handprint molds allow you to remember the physical size of your baby's hand many years later.

Handprint molds of babies and young children are often made for keepsakes. It is a way to help cherish memories and reflect back on how small a child once was. Make handprint molds as part of crafts for display in your home or as a gift to those who care for the child.

Stepping Stone

Craft a stepping stone with a young child's handprint molded to the surface to use in the garden. Stepping stones may be made in various shapes by pouring cement mix into a container of the particular shape. As the cement mix firms, but before it is dry, press your child's hands firmly into the cement to create an imprint. Carefully lift up your child's hand to avoid smearing. Add other elements to decorate the stepping stone, such as marbles around the rim. Allow the cement to fully dry before taking it out of its molding container.

Handprint Plaque

A handprint plaque is an item you can display on the wall. Take a round disposable aluminum pan that is wide enough to fit your child's hand. Punch two holes, 1 inch apart, at the bottom of the pan's edge with a toothpick to insert a strand of yarn so its ends lay in the pan. Pour prepared plaster mix into the aluminum pan and allow it to settle. Lift the yarn ends so that there is plaster below and above it. When the plaster begins to solidify, firmly press your child's hand into it. Carefully lift up the hand to avoid smearing. When the mold is completely dry, turn it upside down to remove the aluminum pan. Use paint to decorate around the rim of the handprint side and include the year so you will remember when the handprint mold was created. Hang up the plaque by the yarn.

Handprint Sand Candle

Craft candles using wet sand molded with your child's handprint. Place wet sand in a wide and deep pan and smooth out the surface. Make a deep impression in the sand with your child's hand. Melt candle wax and hot wax into the impression and place a wick in the center to dry. When the wax is hard, the mold may be removed for use as a candle.

Handprint Beach Treasure

Turn your child's handprint impression in sand into a beach treasure by dressing the mold with seashells. Press your child's hand into wet, hard-packed sand to create an impression. Place seashells on top of the impression without pushing down. Add wet plaster to the imprint to cover the seashells and all other spaces within the imprint. While the plaster is still liquid, but beginning to solidify, submerge a craft stick into the palm of the hand imprint. After the plaster has dried, dig out the sand around the plaster and carefully lift up the handprint mold. Display the handprint beach treasure mold by sticking the craft stick between a wide base wood block with a slit cut in the center.
