You can make your own homemade plaster of Paris molds.
Plaster of Paris can be used for a wide variety of arts and crafts projects. It can be carved like stone, molded into infinite shapes and used to create heirlooms. If you are interested in creating a mold of an object, you can cast a mold using clay and plaster of Paris.
Instructions
1. Knead a ball of terra cotta clay, then shape it into a ball. Use a clay cutter to slice the clay in half.
2. Open up the clay so that the halves lay with their flat sides up.
3. Press an object that you want a mold of into one of the halves.
4. Lay the other half of clay on top of the object, pressing the halves together firmly with the object in between them.
5. Lift off one of the halves, and remove the object.
6. Place the two halves back together, being careful not to disrupt the impression of the object. Press the perimeter to seal the clay together.
7. Cut a hole in the top of the clay mold with a small clay knife.
8. Pour 1 cup of water and 2 cups of plaster of Paris into a bucket, mixing them well. Wear rubber gloves and protective eye wear when handling plaster of Paris.
9. Insert a funnel into the hole in the top of the clay. Pour the plaster of Paris into the funnel, filling it up to the top. Allow the mold to sit for at least 48 hours untouched.
10. After the allotted time has passed, cut open the clay, and remove your casting.
