The Development Of Rose Shrubbery

Roses require yearly pruning to remove weak growth.

More than 6,000 rose varieties exist that offer various growth sizes and colors. The most widely planted varieties are climbers, floribundas, hybrid perpetuals, tea roses, miniatures, shrubs and polyanthas, which produce an abundance of blossoms and require similar care to thrive.

Light Effects

All rose bushes require a minimum of six hours of sunlight per day to produce ample growth and flowers. Plants grown in the shade often suffer from fungal and bacterial infections, which can reduce the growth rate of the shrub.

Temperature Requirements

Most rose bushes are sensitive to both hot and cold weather. They will cease to produce flowers if the temperature rises to above 90 degrees F. Late spring frosts often damage the new growth of the rose bush.

Growth Types

Floribundas, tea roses, grandiflora and heritage roses are considered bush varieties and can attain heights of up to 5 to 6 feet. Miniature roses grow up to 24 inches tall. Climbing roses often attain an ultimate growth of up to 10 feet and shrub roses can grow up to 12 feet, depending on the variety. The height of tree roses is determined by the trunk the rose is grafted to.
