Drywall A Tub Surround

The tub surround is made up of the walls around the tub (generally three of them), which are often surfaced with tile, fiberglass sheets or other waterproof material. Whatever you surface it with, it's important that the wall itself be moisture-resistant as well. ``Wetrock'' is a form of drywall that's made with oils in the gypsum, so it stands up to moisture. It installs in the same manner as drywall, on the bare studs around your tub.

Instructions

1. Take a measurement from the end of the wall to the last stud within 8 feet of the end, along the rim of the tub. Take the measurement from the middle of the stud.

2. Transfer the measurement onto a sheet of wetrock. Score it by holding T-square at the mark, running a utility knife alongside the T-square and snapping the piece at the scored line.

3. Hold the piece of wetrock against the wall with the cut end in the corner of the wall and the factory edge along the middle of the last stud.

4. Screw the wetrock to the wall with screws every 6 inches along each stud.

5. Repeat for each piece of wetrock, building up the wall. Set the sheets so they line up on different studs between courses, leaving no four-way intersections.

6. Press drywall tape over each seam. Spread joint compound over the tape with a drywall knife so the lines are slightly wider than the tape. Get it smooth and flat. Let it dry for six hours.

7. Spread on the next layer of compound over the seams, making it a little wider than the first layer. Let it dry for six hours. The wall is now ready for tile or a fiberglass surround.

8. Sand the seams flat with a drywall sander. Paint the wall.
