Use Plaster Conforms

You can use plaster of Paris to create sculptural molds.


If you have completed a sculpture and want to make molded castings of the sculpture to sell in a store, you can make an effective mold out of plaster of Paris. When you use plaster to make a mold, the finished mold be as hard as stone, making it very durable. You can buy the materials needed in order to make a plaster of Paris mold at any arts and craft supply store.


Instructions


1. Line a cardboard box with a plastic sheeting. This will prevent the plaster from adhering to the cardboard.


2. Coat the sculpture you want to make a mold of using petroleum jelly. The jelly will prevent the plastic from adhering to the sculpture.


3. Fill the lined cardboard with one part water and one part plaster of Paris. Mix well with a paint stirrer.


4. Insert the coated sculpture into the plaster and allow the plaster to set for 1 hour. The plaster will become hot and will harden. Allow the plaster to cool before moving on.


5. Pull the plaster mold out of the box by pulling up the plastic sheeting.


6. Place a chisel onto the center of the top of the mold, and use a hammer to crack open the mold. This will split the mold in half.


7. Remove the sculpture from the plaster, which will reveal the mold that you can use to make a casting.
