Use wall anchors to support breakable items.
Plastic or metal wall anchors provide added support for heavier objects - including shelving, artwork and mirrors - that screws on their own cannot handle. This is especially true if the object is hung on drywall, which is constructed from gypsum and not intended to support much added weight. This is where anchors come in handy. The wall anchor is used in conjunction with screws to provide that extra support to your treasured items on display. Drill an effective pilot hole before inserting the anchor and screw to help ensure your family heirlooms remain safe.
Instructions
1. Examine the anchor to determine the size of drill bit required to create the pilot hole. The bit should be slightly smaller than the anchor and screw to ensure that both fasteners remain tight inside the wall.
2. Locate the area where you intend to drill the pilot hole, paying attention that it's away from any light switches or electrical outlets. Mark the spot with a pencil.
3. Load the drill bit into the drill. Test the drill to ensure that it's turning clockwise. If not, adjust the setting accordingly.
4. Set the end of the drill bit against the wall's pencil mark. Holding the drill at a 90-degree angle, slowly insert the bit into the wall, paying attention that the drill bit remains straight.
5. Insert the anchor and screw according to the package directions. There are several varieties or anchors, from small plastic to large metal toggles, each with unique instructions.
