Estimating the cost of drywall installation is simple.
Although installing drywall in a room is a relatively simple procedure, it's imperative that the installer---whether beginner or novice---begin the project with all of the necessary materials. Calculating drywall finish projects requires taking careful measurements, notes and calculations to ensure accuracy.
Instructions
1. Determine the thickness of the drywall you will be installing in the space. If you're replacing a portion of drywall, you will have to purchase the same thickness drywall as was installed before. Determine the cost of one sheet of drywall in the thickness you need for the project.
2. Measure the height and width of each wall that will need to be installed, taking the drywall thickness into account at corners---one piece of drywall will be butted up against the adjoining piece from the other wall. Write all of the measurements down on a piece of paper.
3. Subtract measurements for windows and doorways from each wall's square footage. Multiply the width by the height of each wall using a calculator to determine the square footage of each wall. Write the measurements down. Add all square footage measurements together to determine the total square footage of the space where you'll be installing drywall. Take the total square footage of the space for installation divided by 32 square feet of drywall---keeping in mind that one piece of drywall is 4 x 8 inches. The total you come up with is equal to the number of drywall sheets you will have to purchase for the project. Multiply the number of drywall sheets by the cost of drywall per sheet to come up with the drywall cost.
4. Multiply the total number of sheets of drywall by 24---the approximate number of drywall screws you'll need for each sheet of drywall. Determine the number of boxes of drywall screws you'll need to purchase based on that figure, and multiply that number by the cost of each box. Take your total square footage and divide by 100. Divide that total by 5 to determine how many 5-lb buckets of drywall mud you will need to purchase. Multiply the total number of drywall buckets by the price per bucket.
5. Measure the length of all drywall seams. Add all seam measurements together. Divide by 300 to determine how many rolls of drywall seam tape you will need to purchase. Multiply the number of rolls by the total cost per roll. Add the total cost for the sheets of drywall, screws, drywall mud and seam tape together to determine the total cost for your drywall installation project.
