Create A Popup Bouquet Of Roses

A rose-themed card is especially appropriate for Mother's Day and Valentine's Day.

A custom-made rose pop-up card is a creative and crafty way to deliver a caring message. Before you begin, stop by a local craft store and florist to pick up necessary supplies. Having a real rose as a reference point will assist you in drawing realistic petals. If you choose to purchase a rose, you can deliver it to the recipient with your card. Simply keeping a picture of a rose nearby will also help you make your card. For guidance writing the message inside the card, look through cards at your local grocery or stationery store. Since you are making a custom card, try to include as personal a message as possible.

Instructions

Making Roses

1. Start your rose by drawing the outline of the rosebud in a rough cylindrical shape with a pencil onto white paper. Your rosebud is the center of your rose.

2. Draw an imperfect circle around the rosebud for the outline of your rose, roughly 3 inches in diameter. You do not want a perfectly circular outline because you want the rose to look as real and organic as possible.

3. Look at your rose or rose image for a reference point before you draw the petals.

4. Begin in the center of the rosebud cylinder, making small crescent-shaped petals all around the center. Draw petals from the inside of the circle to the outside of the rose bud.

5. Sketch the rose petals in the space between the rosebud and the outline of your rose. Look again at your reference rose as you draw. The outside petals of the rose are larger crescents that connect to the bottom of the rose. Begin sketching the outside petals at the top center of your rosebud cylinder, and work your way down to the right. Then return to the top center and sketch rose petals down the left side of the rosebud cylinder.

6. Fill in any remaining space between the rosebud and the outer frame of the rose. Add a few petals that stray slightly outside the rose frame to give the rose a natural look.

7. Color in your rose using three graduating hues of one color. Outline the petals of the rose using the medium shade of your color. Fill in the petals with lightest shade. Add dimension to the rose by coloring the bottom center of each rose petal with the darkest shade. Reference your rose image as you color.

8. Cut out your rose.

9. Use tape to attach floral wire to the back of the rose. Vary the floral wire length, using pieces between 2.5 and 4 inches. The floral wires are your rose stems.

10. Repeat the above steps to create at least five more roses.

Make the Pop-Up Card

11. Fold an 8.5 by 11-inch piece of card stock in half, bringing the smaller sides together. This is the outer portion of your card.

12. Fold another 8.5 by 11-inch piece of card stock in half, bringing the smaller sides together. Cut the card in half along your crease.

13. Take one piece of 4.25 by 5.5 piece of card stock you just cut and fold it down the center, again bring the smaller sides together. Use colored markers to draw a vase in the center of the card stock. This is the pop-up portion of your card.

14. Place the folded pop-up card stock vertically in front of you, with the point of the V closest to you. Tape the ends of the floral wire inside the V with at least three roses on each side.

15. Glue the pop-up card stock into the inside portion of your folded 8.5 by 11-inch card stock. The crease of the pop-up portion should face the outside of the card.

16. Add appropriate messages to the inside and outside of your card with colored pencils or markers.
