What's Best Cloth Or Paper Drywall Tape

Paper drywall tape is the standard product for drywall finishing with joint compound. Fiberglass cloth tape---also called mesh tape---is the standard product for plaster finishing. Which one is better depends on the finishing method you use.

Function

Drywall tape conceals the joints where two drywall panels meet. Workers embed the tape with flat tools and a finishing product, such as joint compound or plaster.

Size

Most retail hardware stores sell both fiberglass cloth and paper drywall tape in rolls of 50 to 200 feet. Building-supply outlets and commercial lumber yards may carry rolls that are longer.

Considerations

Paper drywall tape should be used with joint compound. Fiberglass cloth tape should be used with plaster products. Using either tape with the wrong product may lead to undesirable results like cracking and bubbling.

Misconceptions

Many people use fiberglass cloth tape with joint compound because it seems easier than using paper drywall tape. But the work they do will almost certainly crack over time.

Benefits

Adhesive fiberglass tape is very easy to apply. Its stickiness allows workers to simply lay it on the joint, then cover over it with a smooth coat of plaster.
