Mix Gypsum

Gypsum, or calcium sulfate dihydrate, is a sandy crystalline mineral composition that has been used for hundreds of years in building materials. The mineral forms along beds near sedimentary rock structures and is easily excavated. Gypsum is used to produce bricks, cement, plaster of paris, chalk, drywall, and concrete, and it has many more uses in construction materials. Properly mixing gypsum with water activates its bonding components and produces a sludge or slurry that you can use to form multiple building applications.

Instructions

1. Place 2 lbs. gypsum powder in a large clean tub or bucket. The bucket must be free of any dirt or debris. Any dirt will easily be spotted in the gypsum slurry due to its light color.

2. Add 1 gallon of room temperature water gradually to the gypsum powder while slightly stirring in a circular motion. Use a large mixing spoon or a whisk to mix the gypsum slowly.

3. Soak the gypsum for a few minutes without stirring to allow the water to settle in the gypsum. As water saturates begin stirring again.

4. Stir in additional water and allow it to settle, then continue stirring until the mixture starts to become thick and hard to stir. Ensure that the slurry doesn't contain any lumps.

5. Use the gypsum slurry immediately or within five minutes for your project. The gypsum will dry very fast and will be non-useable after five minutes.
