A plasterer applies a material called "Plaster of Paris" --- a white powder, mainly comprised of gypsum, which is mixed with water --- to create and seal walls at construction sites. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment opportunities for plasterers are projected to increase by seven percent between 2008 and 2018. The projected job growth rate for plasterers is slower than the national average for all professions.
Average Hourly and Annual Salaries
Average salary figures are also known as "mean" computations. The mean hourly salary of a plasterer was $19.84 as of May 2010, according to the BLS. The mean yearly salary was $41,260. Annual wages ranged from $30,240 for the lowest 10 percent of plasterers to $65,420 for the highest group of earners.
Average Salaries by Industry
The nonresidential building construction sector reported the highest mean hourly and yearly salary figures at $20.52 and $42,690, respectively, according to the BLS. The building finishing contractors sector reported salary figures of $20.40 and $42,430. Average hourly and yearly salaries in the residential building construction sector were $19.59 and $40,740. The foundation, structure and building exterior contractors group reported average salary rates of $17.11 and $35,590.
Top-Paying States
Plasterers earned an average hourly wage of $33.12 and an average yearly salary of $68,880 in Connecticut to lead the nation, according to the BLS. New Jersey reported an average hourly rate of $30.30 with an annual average wage of $63,020. Illinois had hourly wages of $25.38 and an average yearly salary of $52,790. Minnesota reported an average hourly rate of $24.47 and an average annual salary of $50,900. Hawaii had an average hourly wage of $24.38 and an average yearly salary of $50,710.
Top-Paying Metropolitan Areas
White Plains, New York, and Wayne, New Jersey, were the top paying cities in the nation for plasterers with an average hourly salary of $32.52 and an average annual salary of $67,640. Chicago, Illinois, had average salary rates of $30.84 and $64,150. Boston, Massachusetts, reported an average hourly wage of $30.28 and an average annual salary of $62,990. Napa, California, reported an average hourly salary of $30.19 and an average yearly salary of $62,800, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, had an average hourly rate of $27.67 and an average annual salary of $57,560.
