Sheetrock is a gypsum panel (drywall) manufactured by USG Corporation. Drywall is a popular choice for finishing interior walls. Holes in drywall are often the result of a doorknob or other object bumping into the wall too hard. Drywall holes are easy to repair using a repair kit. A drywall repair kit usually includes repair patches, a drywall knife, and a small amount of joint compound. The repair process involves covering the hole with a screen material and applying a compound to cover the screen. Painting the repaired hole will usually hide any visual evidence of the drywall damage.
Instructions
1. Determine the size of the drywall repair patch the hole requires. Measure the hole and add 1 inch to every side so the patch will overlap solid drywall. Cut the repair patch to the proper size with scissors.
2. Apply the repair patch over the drywall hole. If the patch is peel-and-stick, peel the backing and press against the drywall until it stays in place. If you are using regular screen patches, apply a small amount of joint compound using the drywall knife around the edges of the patch. Allow the patch to set for a few minutes until it is secure.
3. Apply joint compound over the entire patch with a drywall knife. Apply the joint compound in three thin coats, allowing it to dry slightly between each coat. Allow the final coat to dry for a few hours.
4. Lightly sand the joint compound with sandpaper until the patch is even with the existing wall.
5. Paint the drywall patch to match the wall.
