Polyurethane sealants are used to bond furniture components.
Polyurethane sealants are used as adhesives beause of their tear resistance, toughness, and strength. According to K.L. Mittal and A. Pizzi in their book "Handbook of Sealant Technology," polyurethane sealants are among the most popularly used adhesives. The material offers good adhesion to various substrates such as glass, plastic, wood and concrete--due to its structural properties and elasticity. Polyurethane sealants are used extensively in the construction, automotive and textile industries.
Furniture Industry
According to Hans Rytger Kricheldorf, O. Nuyken and Graham Swift in their book "Handbook of Polymer Synthesis," polyurethane sealants are used widely in the furniture industry (40 percent of polyurethane sealants are used in the furniture industry, 16 percent in transport, 13 percent in construction and the remainder for other applications). Polyurethane sealants are used to bond components of various furniture items such as beds, shelving units, chairs, desks and cabinets.
Construction Industry
Polyurethane sealants are used in the construction industry to seal horizontal traffic joints in highways, pedestrian walkways and airport taxiways and runways. They are used in door, window and siding installation; in roofing systems to provide a weatherproof and expansion-proof seal on roof joints and exterior gaps; and, in concrete applications, to provide an abrasion as well as stress resistant seal parts that are exposed to heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
Polyurethane sealants are also used for drywall applications. They provide a permanent, solid adhesive for bonding plasterboard and gypsum drywall to framing members, metal studs, wood and existing ceilings and walls. They are also used for interior DIY projects, to bond carpeting and floor coverings to concrete, particle board, felt, plywood and other types of floors; and to bond tub enclosures, path panels and other wall panels to hardboard, masonry and other surfaces.
Automotive Industry
Polyurethane adhesives and sealants are used to bond bumpers, taillights, signal lights and headlights to a vehicle. They are applied to vehicle windows and windshields to increase their strength and enhance their fog resistance. Polyurethane sealants are also used to seal seams in body repair shops and to bond dashboards, steering wheels and door panels.
Textile Industry
Polyurethane sealants are used extensively in the textile industry to produce fabric and foam laminates and for stitch, seaming and laminating fabric replacement.
