Cover Brick With Drywall

Many homes built in the '50s and '60s were constructed with decorative interior brick walls. Often this design choice doesn't fit in with modern, updated styles. Painting the brick is an option, but the brick wall is still there and noticeable even after painting. Consider covering interior brick walls with drywall to make your walls look new and fresh.

Instructions

1. Decide if you want to cover a portion of the brick wall or the entire wall. If your wall has a fireplace, leaving some of the brick exposed for a fireplace surround is a nice look.

2. Measure the height and length of your wall. Drywall sheets come in standard 4 x 8 sheets and range in thickness.

3. Purchase concrete or masonry screws. These are special screws designed to screw into and hold things to concrete.

4. Consider using plywood sheets to level the walls. If your brink wall is extremely textured or uneven, this method will protect the drywall from becoming punctured.

5. Attach the plywood sheets to the wall with the concrete screws. Be sure you are screwing into the masonry itself and not the mortar. Select the thickness of plywood you need to adequately level the wall.

6. Apply the drywall sheets to the plywood sheets using drywall screws. The drywall will screw into the plywood which is anchored to the concrete.

7. Mud over seams and screws in the drywall and finish by sanding, priming and painting.
