Bond Durock
to OSB
Oriented Strand Board (OSB), a manufactured structural panel widely used for floor, wall and roof sheathing, has but one vulnerability--moisture. To install ceramic or stone tile over OSB panels, particularly in high-moisture areas such as kitchens or bathrooms, a water and mold resistant cement-based panel such as Durock is applied as a substrate for the tile. Bonding Durock to OSB panels is a simple procedure that insures a secure attachment point and structurally-sound base for the tile.
Instructions
1. Clean the OSB surface of any dirt or debris using a stiff-bristled broom. Use a putty knife to scrape off any chips or spilled materials--such a drywall taping compound--that may have dried on the surface.
2. Spread a layer of construction adhesive over the OSB surface using a notched trowel. Fully cover the area where the Durock is being applied.
3. Lay the Durock panel into place, then press down on the panel to spread the adhesive. Use a screwdriver to secure the panel in place by inserting Durock screws through the Durock and OSB panels, and into the floor or wall framing. The screws should be spaced approximately 8 inches apart.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for all subsequent Durock panels being installed, making certain to stagger the end joints a minimum of 16 inches for structural support.
5. Span each edge and end joint in the Durock panels with fiberglass-mesh joint tape, then spread a smooth, even layer of latex mastic over the tape using a putty knife. Allow the mastic to cure for 24 hours prior to the application of tile.
